Going Underground

In these strange times with people hunkered at home, here at LEAX we’re reflecting on what makes spaces livable.  We think it’s a connection to the rhythms of the sun. This month’s focus is on lower ground spaces and how to feel connected to the world outside. None of the pictures shown here are actual sunlight but they might fool you.

New technology is coming to the rescue with some innovative light fixtures that simulate the color of the light outside at any time of the day.

Many Gyms are placed in lower ground spaces, it’s now possible to make them fun and energetic spaces

Lower ground Office spaces need no longer be so lifeless

Paint or tile the light wells to lower level living spaces a light color and place a color tuned LED flood that will glow warm at night and bright and blue-white in the morning so a feeling of life can creep in around the curtains in those lower ground bedrooms.

Do we still need cable?

There was a time not long ago that EVERYONE had a subscription to Comcast, Dish, or Direct TV. That may be changing. Maybe you want to re-watch Game of Thrones or maybe some Bloomberg. You can watch them both on AppleTV+. Maybe the Lion King and Aladdin are your thing. Disney+ may me the only place for that soon. Both services are coming soon. Here’s what we know.

Disney+

Disney+ is planned for November 12th. So far it has been confirmed for Roku devices and PlayStation 4 as well as tablets and mobile devices. If you’re shopping for a new TV then you’re in luck as Disney+ will also be on select Smart TV’s. Disney+ is eventually planned for other platforms including Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Apple TV, Amazon Fire, and your favorite browser.

AppleTV+

AppleTV+ is planned for November 1st. If you have an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV, you already have the Apple TV app — the ultimate way to watch Apple TV+. You'll also find the Apple TV app on select Samsung smart TVs.

You will note...neither service is available on Comcast.

Warm Glow Dimming Explosion

LED technology has been rapidly growing over the past decade and now there is an even newer LED technology that will change the way you light with LED!   With a standard LED, you chose what color temperature would best work for that location. 2000 degres Kelvin or 2000K, emits a color similar to candle light, warm and inviting.  LED lamps 2700 to 3000K are similar to incandescent and halogen sources and from 4000 to 5500K gives a cooler, brighter color, similar to sunlight.   This is great when you know exactly what you want 100% of the time, however we have run into countless situations where based on time of day, one color temperature is not enough!  Different times of day compliment different color temperature and rather than simply dimming your LED lamp so the power goes down and therefor the light output, you can actually dim your LED lamp so it becomes a warmer color!  The color temperature at full power would be 3000K and as it dims the color temperature drops to 2200K.  The results in LED dimming that is nearly identical to an incandescent light source.

One company that is running with this new technology is USAI Lighting.  They have a patented proprietary algorithm and circuitry that is designed to precisely mimic the black body curve of a standard 100W A19 incandescent lamp by gradually transitioning from 3700K or 3000K to 2200K.
